<a border=”0″ href=”http://www.theprogressiveparent.org/search/label/Tutorial%20Tuesday&#8221; target=”_blank”><img src=”http://fotos.fotoflexer.com/f2c8de4aab53b15c6f0ccf38d79d97ff1320129.jpg&#8221; /></a>

If you’ve made a tutorial for something cool, link up below! Each week, I will feature a blog from the last week’s entry. This is the first week, which means next, it could be you!

I only have three simple rules:

  1. You can submit a tutorial for anything family related, or that has made your life easier or more green as a parent. It doesn’t even have to be current, just please post an entry that hasn’t been entered into *this blog hop* each week. (Limit one entry per blog, per week.) Get some new traffic for existing posts or add new ones along with me. Whatever’s clever!
  2. Grab the code from my button from the sidebar and add it to your own sidebar, or at the bottom of your post along with the code from the Linky.
  3. Subscribe- any and every way you choose! Check out each of the social sites using the tabs at the top of the page. Be sure to leave a comment to tell me how you subscribed so that I can return that favor!
Thanks for checking in & see you next week, parents-

Tutorial Tuesday: Conditioning Coconut Castile Corpus & Coiffure Cleanser (whew!)

28 May
Welcome to Tutorial Tuesday!
(Now a weekly blog hop! Info at the close.)
I know how to do LOTS of stuff. I’ll show you how. Then, you can amaze your friends and family with your savvy ways, make your life easier, more beautiful, natural and eco-friendly, too!

Grab my new button from the
sidebar & never miss a week!
Today’s tutorial is: Conditioning Coconut Hair & Body Wash!

I’ve seen a couple of tutorials on Pinterest about how to make shampoo, conditioner & detangler and most have the same general base, with two problems, for me, personally.

  1. No lather. I love DIY and natural stuff as much as the next girl, but I can’t seem to lost the crave for bubbles in my hair when I’m showering!
  2. It made my hair and skin too dry. You know that freshly cleaned tupperware feeling, where your skin might actually make that “Rrrrrrt!”  sound after washing it with plain bar soap? Yeah, that one. And I have dry, sensitive skin, to boot.

So, I came up with a solution that ended up working for the whole family and cancelling out dozens of chemicals and dollars from our bathroom beauty.

After experimenting on my own (and on my family), I’ve come up with a recipe for an all-over hair & body wash with great lather, that leaves both skin & hair feeling soft and smelling great!

Here’s what you need:

  • A castile soap of your choice. (I like to use Dr. Bronner’s)
  • Coconut milk (from a can, fresh or make your own)
  • 1 tbsp. of Coconut Oil
  • A bottle to store it in

 Mix together:

1/3 cup of Castile Soap (I blend the almond and lavender scents- you can find it in fragrance-free and add 10-20 drops of your favorite scented oil- even Chanel!- for a fragrance all your own. For baby, I like to add the Burt’s Bee’s Baby Blend- aside from the alliteration! ;)

with:

1/4 cup
Coconut Milk
(as you can see, you don’t need to be exact ;)

and

1 tbsp. of
Coconut Oil
(you can also use almond, apricot or olive oil for moisture in addition to the scented oil used for fragrance; feel free to experiment with different levels to suit your skin & hair needs!)

 Blend together
 until frothy & stable

and then you’ve got:

Even Daddy likes it!
Look, lovely lather!

** You can also combine this recipe at a 10:1 ratio with water to make a great detangling spray!
** Remember, coconut milk will need refrigeration after use, which is why I make small batches. :)
Let me know if you try it & how yours turns out!
Which ways did you personalize your recipe?

Tutorial Tuesday: Basic Braiding

22 May
Welcome to Tutorial Tuesday!
I know how to do LOTS of stuff. I’ll show you how. Then, you can amaze your friends and family with your savvy ways, make your life easier, more beautiful, natural and eco-friendly, too!

This week’s subject is Basic Braiding!

This is one of the easiest braids to learn and is a simple cousin to the basic french braid. (Which I should probably include a tutorial of, too!) This braid is very similar, except even easier, using only two pieces. I use a homemade detangler for my girls (tutorial for that coming, too!) and recommend working with recently sprayed/wetted hair. It helps keep the flyaways down and helps keep hair in place, too. It’s actually really hard to work with really clean, dry hair!

When working with toddlers, I put them up on the bathroom counter and have them look in the mirror, as well as hang onto the comb and or/detangler to keep their hands full! This is a really easy braid to start with, even if you’ve never done a simple braid before. I can do all kinds of complicated braids, but figured this is the easiest to start with! Try it out & let me know how it goes and what I can improve to best help you- I’m also considering doing video tutorials for the hair ones, but I feel like people don’t care for videos as much. Would YOU watch or would you rather read? Leave your answer in the comments!

  1. Section the part of the hair you will be braiding into two equal parts.
  2. Tie a basic knot. (You know, the one you learned in kindergarten to tie your shoes!) If the hair is uneven or unruly, you might try wetting it or combing or twisting in a bit of pomade using your fingers to help the lock stay together.
  3. Add a small piece of hair from the loose hair to the strands your are tying and repeat the process. The braid will naturally loosen (unless you’ve used pomade, which helps hold it into place) so I like to work with my fingers as close to her head as possible and re-tighten each knot as I go along. It also helps to twist the strands to keep them together while braiding.

This took me less then 10 minutes to do both braids.
(Give yourself three times that if you’re just starting!)
How did yours turn out?

Tutorial Tuesday: Mama’s Miracle Mending Mud

15 May
Welcome to Tutorial Tuesday!
I know how to do LOTS of stuff. I’ll show you how. Then, you can amaze your friends and family with your savvy ways, make your life easier, more beautiful, natural and eco-friendly, too!

This week’s subject is Mama’s Miracle Mending Mud!

Okay, okay… “Mending Mud” isn’t the OFFICIAL name (and despite it’s green appearance, contains no actual mud), but I want to see if I can keep all of my Tutorial Tuesday Titles All Alliteration (ahem) because I’m nerdy like that. Besides, since giving it that name, I have a couple of Shrek fans in the house who think it’s even cooler. Double win!

This week’s tutorial is special to me in a number of ways. First of all, it is probably the most handy, healing topical remedy I’ve ever encountered. Not only is it all “all natural” and (literally) as green as it gets- made from homegrown herbs and stored & sold (we’ll get there!) in recycled jars- it smells wonderful (not medicinal) so the kids and the DH don’t mind it (this is a HUGE plus in our house) and best of all, it does actually contain miracles.

I’ve personally used this remedy in my family to (almost spontaneously!) soothe and heal:

  • chapped skin
  • diaper rashes
  • scraped knees
  • sunburns
  • athlete’s foot
  • cold sores
  • burns (from a hair straightener, to be specific)
  • insect bites (from a mosquito, the little bugger!)
  • cuticles & fingernails
  • cracked heels
  • acne

and any other skin condition we’ve encountered!

When my 5-year-old falls down outside and limps in, wimpering, “Mama… I need MUD!” the neighbors might give us funny looks, but soon… soon, my pretties, you’ll understand, too.

What’s most special to me about this salve is that the recipe comes handed down woman-to-woman across the decades, almost a rite of passage in itself! The woman who shared this with me is not only one of the most admirable people I’ve ever personally known, she also knew my dad since they went to high school together until he passed a little over a year and a half ago. His absence gives me even more reason to cherish the connections from him that remain. As if I needed an extra reason to cherish this amazing woman!

Let me tell you a few words about how I see “Mama” (or Leslie, as I call her :) before I let her tell you about herself, since “humble” is high on the list of adjectives that well describe her, despite the magnitude of what she accomplishes in a single day, every day. As she and I have developed a friendship of our own, I have come across some other words I would add to the adjective list (in no particular order): devoted, compassionate, insightful, clever, talented, creative, eloquent, patient, intelligent, resourceful, humorous, adaptable, diligent, positive and of course, progressive!

Here’s a little about “Mama” and the “Healing Salve” in her words:

My encounter with this herbal salve began approximately 18 years ago, when my herbalist/midwife introduced it to me. I was 37 years old, expecting my 5th child, and my first home birth. Sharlene made it herself to share with her clients, family and friends, primarily using wild-crafted herbs grown in her own backyard or brought to her by others.

Absolutely wonderful for a baby’s bottom, it is also the perfect personal lubricant. Excema and “ouchies” of all sorts are relieved and healed by more than a half-dozen healing herbs which have been steeped in this olive oil based salve.

Eighteen years and four children later (and thanks to Sharlene’s generosity), I am not only still using the salve, but using her “recipe”, and sharing it with others. I keep tweaking the ingredients list to incorporate healing herbs that grow wild in our “neck of the woods” and that are specific to skin and wound issues.

Our 7th child, Ethan, was born with the umbilical cord wrapped tightly, 3 times, around his neck, compromising the oxygen supply to his brain, and causing a diagnosis of cerebral palsy. Now, you are wondering what this has to do with salve…

Simply this: all proceeds from my salve sales go into an account created just for Ethan’s special needs.

So, if you decide not to go to the trouble of creating this product for yourself, and would rather order it from “Mama”, do it knowing that you will be blessing Ethan. And, may your blessing return to you in the form of healing and health.

There are three additional special ties in my heart to this particular post:

  1. My dad grew up with (a much more high functioning version of) Cerebral Palsy, too. You can read here and find more about his childhood, which was much improved and largely possible due to care from Shriner’s Hospitals. You can learn more about CP here.
  2. Many of the herbs included in the salve have been proven  beneficial in treating skin cancer. There is a hole in my soul that will never be filled because Melanoma took my dad. Please, please wear sunscreen. Pale is better than pallid.
  3. Cerebral Palsy is considered by most health professionals to be a birth injury and largely preventable; though as we see here, not always so. If you have a child with CP, please consider sharing the story of your birth with #birthstrong to help raise awareness for a cause close to both of our hearts. Sharing is caring, and no more so than when it comes to spreading awareness about birth and preventable childhood conditions.
Leslie with Ethan

Speaking of sharing, Leslie runs (in her “free” time!) S.H.A.R.ESecond Hand And Remember Ethan; a gently used clothing and houseware shop that helps support Ethan, as well. You can follow Ethan’s journey over at Ethan’s Rainbow Connection stay in touch with Leslie and her journey with Ethan, her other 7 children, grandchildren, faith, pets, rag-rugging, photography and more, via her blog, Mama’s Musings

How to make
  “Mama’s Healing Salve”

1. Grate 1.5 oz of beeswax per 1 pint of olive oil in a crock-pot on low to warm. (You can also add a bit of coconut, almond or apricot oil to suit your needs)

2. Add 6 or more of the following herbs:
(obviously, you are free to add to this list and customize the salve to your specific needs. I researched SO much to link these to informative articles, click through and see what herbs might benefit you & how)

3. Leave the herbs, melted beeswax and oil in the crock-pot for 2 days on low.

4. She uses sterilized, recycled baby food jars in 2.5 & 4.0 oz. sizes. If you are making this at home, make sure the container is glass, too. As you will see in the next step, there is hot liquid involved. (and plastic is bad, mmmkay?)

5. Using cheesecloth between the funnels, add a few drops of preservative (to ensure stable shelf life- she uses benzoin) and spearmint oil in the jars before adding the hot salve to ensure even mixing.

6. Add lids, wipe the jars clean and you’re done!

Imagine all the healing this will do!

and that’s

*If you don’t find the time, resources or patience needed to make your own salve and would like to contribute to Leslie helping Ethan while helping yourself and your family at the same time by purchasing the salve (at an incredibly modest price, especially compared to the remedies at Whole Foods!) the contact and ordering information is below.

Tutorial Tuesday: Stuff With Strawberries

8 May
Welcome to (my first!)Tutorial Tuesday!

I know how to do LOTS of stuff. I’ll show you how!  Then, you too can amaze your friends and family with your savvy ways, make your life easier, more beautiful, natural and eco-friendly!

Today’s theme: Strawberries! Strawberry season came early this year and I am SO excited to start using two of my favorite home remedies again. Now you can enjoy strawberry goodness in whole new ways, too.

Here are two of my favorite ways to use strawberries at home- other than eating them.

  • Natural Teeth Whitening without ruining your budget, the earth or your enamel. (As long as you don’t do it too often! Dentists recommend about once a week, no more. :) The malic acid in strawberries acts as an astringent to remove stains & discoloration -in case you drink as much coffee as I do! ;)

  1. Crush one strawberry to a pulp
  2. Mix with 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
  3. Spread on teeth and leave 5 minutes, then
  4. Brush that stuff off with real toothpaste and
  5. Behold your whiter, brighter smile!

Next up is:

  • Rejuvenating Facial Mask: Did you know at around 30, skin cell production slow down? Yeah, that means if you’re like me (I am 31 and a HALF, says my 8 year old) your skin could use a pick-me-up every now and again. Plus, it feels SO pampering to my skin simply applying it, nevermind the actual benefits! Oh, those…. Right. Strawberries have salicylic acid (like the active ingredient found in most acne treatments) that rids the skin of dead cells, makes your skin pores smaller and your face look brighter. Um, yes please! But since my skin isn’t so young anymore and it’s also fairly sensitive, I add both cream and honey to soothe, moisturize and heal sun damaged skin. My died died from Melanoma, people. Believe me, I am taking care of my skin- and you should, too!

    1. Rinse the strawberries. You don’t want pesticides, germs or dirt in your mask!
    2. Mash 4 or 5 strawberries in a bowl. (Or let your kid do it, if you’re feeling brave!)
    3. Add a fatty spoonful of heavy cream. (Sorry, I’ve never measured! If you only have milk at home, you can use about 1 tbsp. of milk with a little less butter to substitute)
    4. Mix together with 1 tsp. of honey, preferably raw. (there are tons of trace minerals!)
    5. Apply and leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse with lots of warm water.

*It goes without saying people with sensitive skin should rinse at the first sign of any skin irritation!

      Happy strawberry season!

Do you have any other favorite uses for strawberries other than eating them?
